New - Chinese Jade and Silver Large Flower Pendant/Brooch

Finely carved and beautifully pale heavy jadeite flower brooch that can be also be worn as a pendant. Fitted with sterling silver bail and silver hinged pin with safety clasp.

Jade is the English name given to two distinctly different substances – Nephrite and Jadeite. Nephrite is the famous New Zealand Maori greenstone and the material carved by the Chinese for almost 5,000 years. Jadeite is the rarer and harder material (a sodium aluminium silicate) which eclipsed Nephrite in China during the 18th century.

Jade is a beautiful stone, classed as semi-precious - its lustre improves with age as a result of being worn next to the skin. It can be either dark or light - from almost black-green, through greens, rust to light, - nearly white in colour.

Chinese mythology believes that Jade is ‘descended from Heaven’ and so is an extremely lucky material. But jade has numerous properties ascribed to it by different cultures. The Chinese say that wearing jade brings wisdom, peace, harmony and focus on spiritual matters; The Spanish Conquistadors believed that it helped cure kidney problems. New Age practitioners say it aids dreaming and helps illuminate a wearer’s true path, as well as promoting relaxation and the efficient completion of tasks. It is also said to be an extremely ‘balanced’ stone. Many Chinese people wear (or display in their cars) lucky and auspicious symbols and figures carved out of jade for luck, good fortune and safety

This incredibly beautiful shell comes from the coastal waters of New Zealand and surprisingly belongs to a sea snail. In its watery home the snail wouldn’t even rate a second glance but when its protective lime outer layer is removed an amazing array of blue, green and purple shimmering shades are revealed. The Maoris have always treasured the Paua not only for its fantastic shell that it used as inlay in carvings but also for its tasty meat. Because of this fishing is now strictly controlled and although shells may be picked from the beach, divers can only use snorkels and even then there is a limit to the amount that can be taken to prevent over fishing.
