The Pikoura, featured at the top of the pendant, depicts the joining together of two people for eternity, even though they may move away from each other they will always come together again sharing their lives and blending together in harmony. Jade (Greenstone or in Maori – Pounamu) is a beautiful stone, classed as semi-precious - its lustre improves with age as a result of being worn next to the skin. It can be either dark or light - from almost black-green, through greens, rust to light, - nearly white in colour. Given the name Greenstone by the first European explorers who came to New Zealand in the eighteenth century and saw the Maori people wearing Jade tiki and other ornaments.
