Whale Tail Hei Matua (Fish Hook) Jade Pendant

Jade (Greenstone or in Maori – Pounamu) is a beautiful stone, classed as semi-precious - its lustre improves with age as a result of being worn next to the skin. It can be either dark or light - from almost black-green, through greens, rust to light, - nearly white in colour. Given the name Greenstone by the first European explorers who came to New Zealand in the eighteenth century and saw the Maori people wearing Jade tiki and other ornaments.

The Hei Matau represents strength and determination and brings the wearer peace, prosperity and good health. Suggests a safe journey over water. This Hei Matua has been stylized with the tail of a whale, a creature afforded great respect by the Moari. Presented in traditional manner on an adjustable plaited waxed linen necklace.
