A pearl forms when a small irritant or parasite penetrates and lodges in the mantle tissue of a mollusc. In response to the irritant, nacre is secreted. As the nacre builds up in layers it surrounds the irritant forming a pearl. Cultured freshwater pearls have been given a helping hand and most pearls available today are cultured. By inserting a foreign object into a mollusc, the pearl farmer can induce the creation of a pearl.
