The main birthstone for the month of February is amethyst (alternatives are moonstone or onyx). Amethysts range from violet to dark purple in colour and are a variety of the mineral Quartz. It forms beautiful crystals inside volcanic lava bubbles know as "geodes". Due to its beautiful colour amethyst is one of the most popular gemstones and is said to help to promote inner peace, relieve stress and heal and soothe the mind, body and soul.
